creating the file list for the .spec files

I want to create my own spec files for some packages, but there is a problem. I can't track down the files that are created/modified during a installation, so I can't create the file list for the section %files of a .spec file.
I've tried installwatch, but I just can get it work, every time I use it I get an error. There must be other programs for the same purpose.
