Creating smooth circles with bash

I would like to be able to draw smooth line circles one within another or not.
I have considered composite characters without much luck.
I am wondering if I could create characters with selected pixels turned on within bash. If not then by using anything but Java, Assembly, C??, or TCL/TK to be exec'ed from bash.
Seems like a 9x6 character set could then be positioned to create a nearly smooth circle.
Any suggestions along this line appreciated as drawing with standard characters yields horribly boxy circles.

are you talking about ASCII art? look at aalib and libcaca.

otherwise, creating graphics from the command line, i guess imagemagick is one way, but i'm sure there are others.
