Creating shortcuts to programs

to run an application in windows we click on *.exe files or their shortcuts. In Linux I installed a new desktop environment which has its own menu and I like to create a shortcut to Opera browser. how do i do this? which particular file should i link to the shortcut?

You should create a "shortcut to a program"... something like that. Then you will be able to put a command into a form or so. That's the usuall way in KDE. If you put "opera" into that form, then the shortcut will run opera by just clicking it. It's like a smal command line which runs in the background.
But you said you are using a new desktop environment. Which one is this? Does it allow to create shortcuts on the "desktop"?

Well, some screenshots of that environment look like gnome. I think you can choose the kde-like way to create a shortcut on the desktop...
