Creating compressed PDFs

While OpenOffice and other applications can create PDF documents, my experience is that the average PDF created in Linux is 2-3 times bigger than the same PDF created by Adobe Acrobat Professional v6.0 or later.

Is this due to Linux creating PDFs using the old PDF standard, or can I do some tweaking in Linux (SuSE and Fedora) to make the PDFs I create smaller and more efficient. (ie I prefer to keep my attachments under 100k. Our company brochure is 35k when created by Adobe, and 103K when created by OpenOffice).

Thanks in advance for any insight.

(PS. Why is Adobe so slow to release Linux versions of *all* their products?)

To my knowledge I think that OpenOffice uses some of the old PDF code that Adobe made public a while ago. This is probally several versions old and of course their most recent PDF Distiller will probally producer far leaner and superior PDFs simply due to the fact that its the most recent development.

As for a solution to this. I don't know. Someone else may know more.

Adobe is probally slow to release a native port of Adobe Acrobat because its expensive to port it and currently Linux only holds a 1.3% share of desktops.
