Creating a user is Suse 9.0

hi, whenever i set up a user in Suse 9.0, I can't log on with a user account. However I can log on with a root account. The Suse install CD requested I create a user, which I promptly did - and when found I could not log this user on I deleted the account and created a new one - just in case I had fuzzed it up. But that stil didn't work.

Does anybody have a clue what's going on? What do I have to do to log on as a user?

Thanks in advance.

Oh, ok I think I figured it out, for some reason I only allocated 3.5GB to Suse instead of 35GB - so it has run out of free space and cannot create a user /home directory.

Erm... the question is, how do I reallocate free space without loosing any data?

Is there any tool, graphical or otherwise that would enable me to do this?

Also, is there a way to add mp3 and DVD support to Suse? It doesn't appear to have it...

adduser <user_name> -> to create an user
passwd <user_name> - to change this user passwd

run "yast2" as root, if you have KDE or GNOME there should be an entry on the menu under "system." Yes, SuSE is one of the only distros to have dvd/mp3 support as they include the non-free things and such that other companies such as Red Hat, being a US company, cannot. You may not have installed it. Try playing an mp3 in XMMS or watching a DVD in Xine. If those two progs aren't installed, you can install them with YaST2 or just do a complete reinstall. YaST2 has a "partition tool"

Ok well I found a tool entry in Yast2 called 'disk partitioner'. But it refuses to start. What is the CL prompt to start it? Lol - I guess it would be kind of funny if I didn't have enough disk space to start the disk partitioning tool. Surely there must be a very simple way to resize partitions?

I have to say though that Yast2 looks very cool.

Suse looks quite a bit more polished than other distros I have tried. Maybe if i get everything working I will switch from Gentoo. I'm bored with having to compile things all the time. It just takes too long. I wonder though if desktop Suse has a future? It looks to me like Novel are gearing up to compete with Red Hat in the Enterprise market. I can't see a big company like that absorbing any significant losses for a long period of time.

Yes it is very polished...sorry for not using it sooner. YaST2 imo is the best configuration tool available. Anyway the command line option is yast2 -i which will show you all the modules available for loading. I couldn't find paritioner in there..perhaps its going by an obscure name? Try any modules you don't recognize..they might be using a different name.
