Creating a dvd movie out of different movie files..

What program would be the best to make a DVD out of 4 different avi's and put them all on one DVD and then later be able to choose which one 2 play with the dvd player with the remote... And is there any special hardware required to do so ?

mencoder is your friend here. However, there are a range of other dvd authoring software, just google (linux dvd authoring) or look for a package in your distro repositories.

For that matter - it is strongly urged that you edit your profile to include some idea of where you are and what your regular distro is. This will appear under your name to the eft of your posts and it is a great help when coming up with suggestions for you.

I am running Kubuntu or Debian, so am i going to need an Divx compatible dvd player or will any dvd player work, since i dont want the movies to be played on a computer but rather on a stand alone dvd player.

... the files only need to be in a format that a dvd player can read. Note: you need not encrypt them or add any drm. The dvd authoring wizard should be a good start - never used it myself though. You add mpeg2 files to a playlist then follow the questions to create a menu. Should be fine and simple and just what you need.

Problem - it seems to have stopped working in kubuntu.

Hmmm... in passing, noticed this little thing: http://varsha.sourceforge.net/
