hmm if you mean a 3d rendering engine there is crystal space (crystal.sourceforge.net)

You can download the blender program at www.blender3d.org
The program is free. And there are no restrictions on it's use, i.e. you could use it at work.

I've heard good things about povray, although it's a standalone renderer, it's said to be one of ( if not the best ) rendering engine available.

Just to add to the replies....with regards to povray, I've found that kpovmodeler (google it) is a very good gui front end for povray on Linux. Just my $0.02.

I'll post here instead of making a new thread............
Slackware 9.1, which uses KDE 3.14 installs kpovmodeler by default.
KDE 3.10 which came with Slack 9..0 does not offer this.......
Of course Pov-ray does not come with Slack, you have to d/l the 8 meg file, but kpovmodeler is a very good frontend GUI for Pov-ray.............
and unlike blender.......Pov-ray has been Open Source from Day one!!

Another vote for Blender (no, you can't do 3D in Gimp).
Other worthwhile options are Maya (if you have some big cash) and Wings3D
