Create subtitle in dvd-movie??

I have asked before, but no reply. So I spent the weekend trying to fix this - it should be simple really??? And I do have a lot of doc's about dvd-creation now, unfortunately rather few people seem to bother about subtitles. So:

I have 60 movie.mpg's created with tovid for dvd.
Now I want one line of text displayed - one line for each mpg, displayed during the whole .mpg.
I thought I'd found it, subtitle/subtext which you can create with spumux.
Problem:
The subtext is sometimes visible in Xine, if I choose subtitile '0', sometimes not. Choosing 'auto' or trying with any other movie-player = no subtitle. Choosing '0' it displays, but jumping forward or backwards or restarting the movie = no subtext.
Even if it's visible in Xine it is never even present as a choice on the dvd. There are no subtitles.
I tried putting <subtitle ...> in dvdauthor.xml (in approx 3586 variations) no success.
There is also a variable in dvdauthor's manpages:
Code:
subtitle (s2, rw)
              The subtitle track, ranging from 0-31. If you want the subtitle
              to always be displayed, then you should add 64 (i.e. choose
              64-95).
so I played around with that too, need I say with no success?
The last tries now results in a dvd that can't be played in anything.

Is there anybody out there who can help me out? ...or pretty soon I'll crawl into the floppy-drive and press <delete> ...

...sigh.... no answer...
So I tried 'ksubtile'.
Unfortunately it doesn't work - says 'Mplayer is found!' but can't open any videofile. (They play from commandline 'mplayer movie.mpg' however.)
So does anybody know how I can get ksubtile to work?
I tried installing mplayer-gui and mplayer-586, no difference. (For some strange reason I can't have both gui & non-gui in Debian??? And no nice gui control either, like I had in Fedora/Lorma/Mandrake.)

Message when starting ksubtile (a bit shortened):
Code:
[~]# ksubtile: Symbol `_ZTI7QWidget' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking
ksubtile: Symbol `_ZTI11KMainWindow' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking
MPlayer 1.0pre7-3.3.5 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel Pentium 4/Xeon/Celeron Foster (Family: 8, Stepping: 9)
Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes
CPUflags:  MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
Compiled for Debian.

73 audio & 180 video codecs
Usage:   mplayer [options] [url|path/]filename

ksubtile works

I got mplayer working in ksubtile, it does not load every file, but the file it loaded had following type:

==========================================================================
Opening audio decoder: [mp3lib] MPEG layer-2, layer-3
AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 320.0 kbit/20.83% (ratio: 40000->192000)
Selected audio codec: [mp3] afm: mp3lib (mp3lib MPEG layer-2, layer-3)
==========================================================================
==========================================================================
Trying to force video codec driver family ffmpeg...
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Selected video codec: [ffodivx] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4)
==========================================================================

And ksubtile works nicely with mplayer. The subtitle input method is not the best possible, but I should send a patch instead of whining (since I have the skills to improve it)

For best speed, you should use mplayer-386 package, it detects the SSE & MMX optimizations run-time for current processor, so at least for me (Athlon XP) it really rocked compared even to the mplayer-k6 package which is supposed to be optimized for Athlons.

Have you set the subtitle language?
eg.
Code:
    <titles>
        <subpicture lang="en"/>
        ...
