Courier imap installed to serve Maildir. But how do I send emails?

Hi,

I am somewhat new to Limux, but have a software development background. I am moving from MS Outlook to Evolution. Now, I want to have a Maildir based email database. So I went for fetchmail/procmail to deliver my mail into Maildirs, all working nice. Then I understood that Evolution does not store sent mails in that structure, so I used Courier to serve the Maildirs, and Evolution connects to that Imap server and gets the mails. That works. So the receive path is all great.

My problem is still sending emails. Let's say, I have two email accounts: abc@gmail.com and def@yahoo.com. Using fetchmail/procmail/Evolution, I am able to read those emails. But when I send an email to, say friend@somewhere.com, what SMTP server should I configure in Evolution? If I configure Gmail and Yahoo, then the sent mail will not go into the mail database that Courier serves.

Secondly, since Courier is aggregating emails from Gmail and Yahoo, I have only one account in Evolution now, which is a local login into Courier. How do I switch email accounts in the From: field of my message? Do I have to setup a separate Sendmail on my machine? Since my machine has a dynamic DNS, that seems difficult as well. What is the way out?

Any tips would be deeply appreciated.

Regards
Sanjay

For the first point.
I bet this can be achieved by settting a MTA (mail transfert agent) and/or an MDA (mail delivery agent) --> Sendmail or alike. A look at your distro's wiki should help you check & eventually decide which one to go for.

I have basic needs and use *msmtp*. It's is a very simple and easy to use smtp client (MTA) with excellent sendmail compatibility. (nice paper, Arch's wiki)

My 2 cents as I use a very different configuration.

Thanks for the reply, kozaki. I found a solution after I did some study. I have now switched over to Thunderbird, and there I can specify the mailbox to be used for sent mails. Providing imap://localhost/... does the trick, and my sent mails are now all in the Imap mailstore.

Thunderbird also allows multiple identities associated with an account, so that "From:" can be changed at will. That should take care of my second concern. I am still migrating my emails from Outlook, and have not got a chance to try the config. But I am reasonably sure, it should work.
