Counter-Strike Updates and Wine
Hello all,
I have installed wine, and installed a retail version of counter-strike. The installation went without a hitch and I could play counter-strike no problem (on a LAN, I am without internet at the moment). I tried both the training and a de_dust LAN game, graphics and sound were spot on. Even the game menus were very fast, despite the Half-Life HOWTO saying they would be slow. I killed everything, including wine, and then installed my first patch (cs1004.exe) with wine. After this, the menus were much slower, but everything still seemed to be fine. However, when I started the LAN game, I got the Loading... screen up but it just hangs there. I left it for over an hour just to make sure, but the game wasn't starting at all. I am sending this from work, so I can't give much detail, but I am running Slackware 9.0 with a slackware Wine package from Linuxpackages. The wine install is fine I am sure as Counter-Strike ran flawlessly without being patched. I have an NVidia GeForce4 MMX 440, with the latest NVidia drivers. Does anyone have a Counter-Strike Retail patched to 1.4/1.5 working? If so was there anything in particular they did with the patches? I am just doing 'wine cs1004.exe' to patch, and starting with 'wine cstrike.exe -- cstrike.exe -console'. I know it says not to start up with this method in the HOWTO but I couldn't access the custom start up script last night, so I will that this weekend.
Thanks,
munkeh
P.S. I did a search, but could only find "Mine's working" or "Mine isn't" messages about CS! :-/

Copy simply an up to date version of CS from a windows machine to linux or use .zip files to upgrade your CS...

i have cs running perfectly on my box with the 1.5 cs upgrade and also upgrade hl to the latest...there is nothing special you have to do to apply patches you just type "wine cs1004.exe" like you already said...well since your saying you are running from the command line, are you getting any error messages in the console when you say it "hangs"?

Yes:-
err:x11drv:X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsExW No matching mode found!
I have read elsewhere that if I try running it as a normal user rather than root, then this will solve my problems. I am going to try this when I get home...

Thats right. I always try to get things working in root, so that if its only permissions preventing it working that won't be the first issue that I come across. When I installed the retail version it ran fine as root...

WINE + Couter-Strike
I tried running as a user and got into permission hell :-( Looks like I'll have to work this one out on my own...
