i have downloaded and installed wine. which i tried to install half-life on but had troubles, that, i will ask if anyone can tell me this...
is there a demo version or "otherwise" of WineX, i am just a lowly unemployed student with no credit card needing to try it out, i dont want any of that subscription i JUST wanna play cs on my RH9 machine.
[i have been informed that openGL wont work properly with wine as opposed to winex] but will cs work with wine? if so i can ask how to install it properly and get it all working properly sooner the better - been but still
I have tried with wine and wineX , they are both pathetic buggy attempts at playing CS, even if you do get it going after hours of work the game runs at 1/4 of the speed and sound is laggy.. Do your self a favor and just run it under windows.. I like CS so much I keep a WIN 9X partition on my PC just to play this game.. You only need to spare 5GIG..
in that case surely there is a VMware for linux to run a virtual windows desktop in linux, that i can run cs in....
i have seen VMWare (tm) in windows2000 before now and seen it open all kinds of operating systems, this would be good if i could have a program that opened up a window for win98/ME and auto-opened CS maximised.
idea for a very good program IMHO - only thing that holds linux back is the programs. if all programs were like rpm's and more applictions were linux compatible the world would be a better place.
Vmware is a great product, if you don't want to barder out disk space or reboot your machine for your windows programs.. I used it very early on several years ago and even back then it was a great product, performance has really improved since then.. You will still take a performance hit but if your running anything over 2GIG you probably won't notice or if you do you can live with it..

That's not true. I got Counter-Strike working under my linux box (Intel Pentium 4 - 2GHZ, 512 RAM, Geforce4 MX 440) with winex3. It runs as nice as it did in Windows if not faster. The only problem with Counter-Strike is that when you start the game, you get some error messages. Clickin' on them, the game starts normally. This is due not exactly a WineX3 issue, but everybody knows that Half-Life is the most buggy game in the history of programming. You can get stuck at wall, elevators, loading points and the patches, now over 80 megas download, don't fix anything but multi player. Plus, they took WAY TOO long to make a Linux Port. And to finish, it's the easiest game to crack and hack with cheats. So don't blame WineX for it's errors at the start up because the true fault, is the lamers programmer from Vault who hard coded two nice coded engines (Quake and Quake 2) to make a buggy one (Half-Life).
Give winex3 a shot, it's worthy the money and it rocks if you know how to use it, and most, don't
Oh yeah, there's also a free versions of WineX3 that you can download from their page thru CVS. Use the search button in this forum for free WineX and you may find something as well.
what exactly is your error message when using wine...i have cs running perfectly fine with the regular version of wine, so giving some error messages you are getting may help us help you also if you do a search in this fourm for "winex free" you will notice i told people in the past on how to go about getting winex without purchasing it...i've given four options...
First of all it doesnt run at 1/4 speed. Maybe with a 500Mhz PC and a radeon that will be true. With a half way decent cpu and a nvidia ti card will run pretty nice. Also doesnt run faster than in windows, so anyone who says that is not telling the truth. If you are a competitive player than wine(x) isn't for you. In heavy action it will slow down. Vmware will not run games since there is no directX. Also regular wine runs counter-strike faster than wineX but takes a little more skill to get working, not much skill but just slightly more, and has few a more issues. Free version like he said would be wineX cvs.
glad i waited for a second opinion, is there a free vmware download for linux in which i can run my winME copy OR a Counter-strike/Half-life download that is already in linux format?
Others may have had better luck with winex then me, I still "try" to use it but the only game I own that works without flaw is Red Faction.. Anyone who tells you any game that runs just as fast or faster under winex is flat out blowing smoke.. WineX WILL NEVER BE AS FAST AS WINDOWS use some common sense.. If you think I am the only one who has problems with wineX just go over to linuxgames.com and read some of the other posts of wineX users. WineX may work well one day but for now it's beta quality at best for 80% of the games out there. Not that things won't get better over time but my years worth of subscription didn't yield my moneys worth in the return product.. Do yourself a favor for now and keep a WIN partiton for your old games and vote with your $$$ and support the native linux ports comming out...
am i the onlt 1 who installed wine.....
slapped in my CD windows disk, installed,
then ran counter-strike and have it work forst time, AND an extra 10 framer per second over windows ????

Oops, sorry I've missed your reply DrOzz. The error I get is some illegal C++ functions at the game start. Basically, I believe it's a function error trying to call the game opening but it fails. Nothing really big, but I don't have it installed anymore to tell exactly the error messages. Since steam release I've put my Half-Life CD under the bed and I won't ever touch it again . But thanks for trying to help
