could not install mysql on linux

Hi, you:

Me is trying to install mysql on linux. Me downloaded mysql-5.0.67.tar.gz
, unzipped and ran mysql_install_db.sh, Me got this error message :

"FATAL ERROR: Could not find @bindir@/my_print_defaults"
@bindir@/my_print_defaults
If you are using a binary release, you must run this script from
within the directory the archive extracted into. If you compiled
MySQL yourself you must run 'make install' first.

Does anybody know what is up with this?

Thanks in advance

Joe

It's better if you install mysql from your distribution repository, not from a tar.gz archive.
But if you want to install it from the archive, please read the documentation first. The script you're running is not the script that installs the server. It's supposed to install the actual databases when the server is already in place. I suppose, there's a file called README or INSTALL in the archive. Please read it before attempting an install.
