Corrupted sound in mplayer DVD playback

Hi,

So I recently installed Gentoo and mplayer 1.0pre5-3.3.3. It plays xvid / quicktime perfectly, however when I ask it to play DVD's my sound is missing (it sounds like static). I've been trying for a while to fix it. Any pointers will be welcome.

Interestingly, when I use dvd::rip and rip the DVD to a dvix / xvid, then mplayer has no trouble playing the sound correctly. I can't for the life of me figure this out. Help most welcome,

You may want to try out Xine instead of mplayer for watching DVDs. IMHO Xine is quite a lot better than mplayer ONLY for DVDs...

I'm in the process of compiling and instaling Xine. But I'm still pretty curious about what's wrong here. Besides, if I ever decide to use mencoder to rip DVD's then I'll be in trouble.
