Copying Windows 7 Files over Using Ubuntu to a DVD

Hi there,

I am trying to recover some files on a corrupted Windows partition. I have not installed Ubuntu but rather am running it from the CD. Does someone know how to copy those files over from the Windows partition over to Ubuntu so that I can burn those files onto DVD? Thanks so much!

Hello,

If windows is the only OS on the computer that you are working on, you could always plug up an external hard drive or USB flash drive, and backup your files to that.

Cheers,

Josh

Yes, I know that. However, that external drive is not easy to get to at this very moment and I was trying to just burn those files to a DVD for the moment. Now, since I am running Ubuntu from the CD, I had another thought, could I transfer those files to another PC running Windows 7 from Ubuntu? If I create a Windows workgroup could I transfer those file to a network share?

Oh definitely you can, you just need to set up samba, and share your files that way.

I think ftp is a better option. you can use this very good, free, fast, simple ftp server for win: http://www.freesshd.com/
then simply start ftp client in Ubuntu or open location from file browser.

BTW, I think there are liveCD distros out there that can run entirely from RAM so the drive is not occupied. DSL or Puppy might work like that (not sure).

You can use ssh, if you want to transfer files securely.
