GNOME's clipboard, last time I used it was in need of some work. The way I copy-paste stuff is using the X method, as it doesn't rely on any particular DE and will work however you try it. Highlighting text will copy it to the primary buffer, then middle-click in a different spot and it'll paste. Any text that is highlighted is in the primary buffer and is paste-able with a middle-click. X also has a secondary buffer making it possible to have two selections going at once but I forget how to do it. Just different mouse combinations but since I never use it I can't remember how its done.
