Copy and paste in GNU/Linux

I seem to sporadically be unable to use the middle mouse button "copy and paste feature". I.e. sometimes the copy/paste feature simply does not work, the middle mouse button works, but it doesn't copy/paste the text that is highlighted, it seems to only happen between rxvt/xterm and regular X11 programs like Firefox or gvim.

What could the cause for this be? Any ideas?

That middle button function has always caused problems for me. When I'm running an X environment I use the highlight/copy -> paste. It's all part of my philosophy to not fight with things that irritate me. Just do it differently.

i found that in kde, the selected text expires from the clipboard after about 30 sec. unless you use it... this is especially true copying out of konsole.
