cool eye candy with transparency/mplayer

I was playing around with the mplayer command options, where I came across the -rootwin option.

Looks pretty cool playing a video in the background(not practical, but cool), however I was wondering which terminal supports transparency such that the mplayer video appears playing in the terminal. I've tried out aterm, rxvt, gterm, kconsole. They just show the background wallpaper when transparent.

Is there a way to get the terminals to become transparent to mplayer?

Yes you need to use a diffrent X. Currently most WM/DE's fake transparency, becuae alpha blending isn't available with XFree86 so you need something like Kdrive, or similar.

Then they can use transparency directly.

Thank, I had a look at the freedesktop project page. It seems it is a long way of from a at least a alpha level code.
Maybe when slackware 15 comes out, it will be part of the packages.

Then again, I guess good things come to those who wait.
