Convert to 16 bit bitmap

How can I convert a bitmap image to a color depth of 16 bits?

It's also known as highcolor and has 65536 possible colors. I am uploading photos to my cell phone and it crashes if I put anything higher than 16 bit bitmaps on it.

Thank you so much!

Well, I haven't used kpaint much, but I think in MS-Paint, you can select in the save As option to save under 16 bit bitmap.
Hope this helps!

That's what I thought too. The only save options in Windows Paint are actually 16 color mode (4 bit), 256 color mode (8 bit), and 24 bit mode, at least in Windows XP.

I'll have to try KolourPaint when I get home.
