I save a lot of webpage scans using the excellent Firefox add-on "Page Saver WE". It saves them as .png files which I find impossible to print to paper because they shrink to the page. I have tried lots of different image viewers and other software and made many adjustments to try to print them, without success. PDF files always print without many problems.
Is there any offline software available that will convert png files to pdf files?
i think there's a different problem here:
once the pages are saved as PNG, they are images, not text files.
a conversion to PDF will simply create a PDF with the PNG image embedded, not a text PDF.
this might or might not have similar printing problems.
I tend to a2ps and ps2pdf for that conversion. But I find it simpler to print with the gimp. Although I tend to adjust the image to be grayscale or higher contrast so it prints better. And because my printer is out of color ink and oddly hard to find off the shelf for a decade old printer.
I did try printing a pdf made from wrapping a png in a pdf wrapper.
Unfortunately that pdf would also only print to one page, as did the original png file. The print-out was unreadable as several pages were shrunk to one page, because it was fitted to the page by length rather than width.
I am still looking for something that can print out a long thin png file on to a page by width rather than length, and hence print it over more than one page.
I had a set of PNG files That I wanted to transfer to my Book reader.
I did it by saving a copy of each as a BMP in a folder. I then used a program called BMP2PDF to create the PDF from the folder.
I tend to a2ps some pdf's to get "single" pages, and then print the single pages in gimp (which can open PS files / and PDFs). But it takes a few options to get single pages out as the defaults seem to favor two to a page (like a book / pamplet). I did OCR someone's PDF resume that they had done, it was a PDF file which was an un-editable image. The results were not pretty as lower case Ls were almost always 1's. And various other issues with (, ), [, ], I, l, |, and whatnot. It was a heavy proof reading process and I still missed some corrections.
