Convert AVI to MPEG?

Q1.
Is there an app for this on linux? It doesn't even have to use X. I have a few AVI files I'd like to watch on my DVD player, and apparently, DVD players arent capable of playing AVI (seems stupid to me...)

Q2.
My DVD manual says that the DVD player can't use CD's that are 80 minutes, only 74minutes/650 megs. Why is this?? It also doesn't like CD-RW's. Both types of CDs fits in the player, but it just doesn't play. Why?

-thanks

Question 1) Yes there are many programs out there for linux video conversions. There is a script on freshmeat.org that will convert the file for you into an mpeg or dvd. Ill look for it in a sec.
But when you burn the file, you will probably have to burn it as a VCD or SVCD (Super Video CD). Most dvd players, well I dont know about newer ones, dont play just mpegs, you need to actually burn the cd as a VCD.
