Convert a .dat (vcd?) to ipod-viewable mp4

Hi. I have a .DAT video (which I believe it came from a VCD) which I'd like to convert to MP4 video which my iPod 30Gb 5.5G could read.

I believe mencoder would do the job, wouldn't it? But what about the settings I should put to make it readable by an iPod?

Have u tried Handbrake? It's free and I think it runs on Linux as well.

I have created a blog showing how to do it on Mac but that should be nearly the same steps on Linux.
