controlling programs from a shell window

I am hoping there is a general way to access software via the shell.....

I would like to run Maya commands from a shell window? For example I read in the help docs that of OSX in Applescript you can type "tell application maya "sphere" and it build a sphere.

I also tried piping e.g. maya | source script.mel this spat some errors at me and opened maya......though seem promising.

I once read an article on controlling/viewing the output of a shell window(or sharing) for remote administrators. This involved something like piping the current window to another.....This I don't know enough about.

Thanks. I hope this makes sense.

I don't think piping works like that in Linux....what that looks like to me is "execute Maya, but send it though the source program....something about script.mel....ummm....error."

You could probably do "maya script.mel" without error, but I haven't tried it.

Check it out. Maya can open command ports for access to commands.

MilkShaw: You use maya suse? How well does that work?

Very well, as far as I could tell. I started using Blender shortly after installing, though....Maya's a bit expensive, and since I'm not a 3D pro I decided to go with something within my budget =o)
