controlling a device

Hi,

I am making a device (a robotic hand) for my personal use, and I want it to control from a computer.

As far I know, I need to write a driver. To read the signal by driver, I need to attach some electronics (which I don't know) to the device. Could you give me some ideas?

Thanks.

In a nutshell it depends on how you design the hardware. There are many many options....

The simplest method would be to use a legacy parallel port to control your hand. You can find lots of information on designing/building circuits and programming the parallel port on the internet.

The serial port has some control lines that can be bit twiddled and you can use the it to send commands to a microprocessor based unit. Lynxmotion (http://www.lynxmotion.com/p-395-ssc-...ontroller.aspx) makes a RS-323 32 channel servo controller. There are many USB based micro-controllers that appear as a serial port and therefore easy to program from the computer side.
