The simplest method would be to use a legacy parallel port to control your hand. You can find lots of information on designing/building circuits and programming the parallel port on the internet.
The serial port has some control lines that can be bit twiddled and you can use the it to send commands to a microprocessor based unit. Lynxmotion (
