Well, rsync probably wouldn't help. ext4 would scatter them again. Perhaps I could make a small fixed 4Gb vdi, rsync and later expand it, but that would be too much hassle. Also, as rknichols nicely put it, I'd be "constantly fighting against the filesystem". 1Gb lost space is not too much, I'll just live with it.
