Question Connection dropped by imap-server

i have this error message when logging from Squirrelmail on my Fedora Core 3 server

ERROR : Connection dropped by imap-server.

i'm able telnet my server from localhost, but unable telnet from outside
[root@vhsv xinetd.d]# telnet
telnet> open localhost 143
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.

here is the iptable rule copied from webmin:
Accept If protocol is TCP and destination port is 143 and state of connection is NEW

is that any problem with my imap settings ?
