connecting to sympatico ADSL using DrakConnect with mandy 91...

Hello!
I have just installed mandrake 91 on a dual boot with an existing w2k partition. When I try to connect to sympatico high speed (no troubles in windows) the modem's little lights flash, etc. and the Network monitor window (called by Drak Connect) show that handshaking or what ever is going on, but the connection ultimately fails.

I read through the rpppoe.conf file and made sure that I had the correct username and password, as suggested in the file, but still no luck!

In the past, I was able to connect to sympatico on the same computer (mandy 90) using an older version of the roaring perguin pppoe client, and everything went fine.

Is it possible that my running the DrakConnect connection wizard multiple times has resulted in a unuable pop-secrets file? (I edited it by hand in vi, and so there are multiple empty lines at the beginning of the file, for example) . This is the only thing I can think of.

Is there a place where I can examine the logs of the interaction between my modem and the network? The "logs" button in the Network Monitor appears to be non-functional.

regards,
doug

Ouch!

That was embarassing! It turns out that I could see the log output by running adsl-connect from the command line. This in turn pointed to a pap-authentication failure, caused by the wrong user/password pair in the pap-secrets file created by DrakConnect when I didn't include '@sympatico.ca' in the user name field.

I guess DrakConnect doesn't rewrite pap-secrets each time it is run. Even blank lines (where I used vi to delete the first, erroneous value pair) were enough to cause adsl-connect to be rejected. So make sure to get it right the first time!

regards,
doug
