Connecting SuSE 9.2 to XP home

Hi everyone,

I have a small wired home network that I use to share a dsl network connection. I use Samba on the SuSE machine and Win 98 and XP home on the other computers. There is also a network print server. The first problem I have is that I can get to the SuSE computer from XP but I cannot get to the XP machine from SuSE or Win 98. It prompts me to logon but I do not know where to set up the login in XP like I did on Samba. I think I might be in the wrong forum for this question but thought I would give it a shot. I have tried connecting with firewalls on and off.

My second question is in regards to my D-link router. From XP I can get straight to the web configuration by typing the IP Address then logging in. From SuSE it tells me that the address cannot be found. I am sure that there is a simple solution to this one, but have yet to figure it out.

Thanks as always

xp home hmmmm.

in general: all accounts that are present on the xp machine ( setup with start menu -> control panel -> user accounts ) should work.
(definitely true with xp pro).

file and printer sharing must be enabled for the network adapter that is used ( control panel -> network connections -> local area connection )

if you open a linux console window and type:

Code:
smbclient -U administrator -L IP.OF.XP.MACHINE.GOES.HERE
and enter the admin password accordingly you should see something like this:

Code:
Domain=[NAME OF XP  MACHINE] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN M...]

        Sharename Type Comment
        --------- ---- -------
        E$ Disk Default share
        IPC$ IPC Remote IPC
        D$ Disk Default share
        print$ Disk Printer Drivers
        Printer2 Printer Acrobat Distiller
        ADMIN$ Disk Remote Admin
        C$ Disk Default share
        Printer Printer Acrobat PDFWriter
session request to xxx.yyy.zzz.nnn failed (Called name not present)
session request to xxx failed (Called name not present)
Domain=[NAME OF XP MACHINE] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN M...]

        Server Comment
        --------- -------

        Workgroup Master
        --------- -------

if you share a drive or a folder with xp home it should pop up in that list.

let's say your XP machine has an IP of 192.168.0.55 and you've just shared a folder with the name "free-stuff" and there is an account for a guy named "john". to connect to it just use konqueror and enter a valid username + password or in a console window type

Code:
smbclient -U john //192.168.0.55/free-stuff
you'll be asked for john's password.

if no error messages appear you can browse the folder with konqueror or user "dir" within smbclient to see the folder's contents.

unfortunately I cannot give you any hints regarding Win98 connecting to XP - except to get rid of win98 of course. Win98 to samba works fine. for samba logins the Win98 machine must have accounts with the same usernames and passwords as setup within smb.conf and smbpasswd.
to "set up" a new account on Win98 just enter a fresh username and password when the login screen of win98 pops up.

have you tried to ping the xp machine from the linux box ?

I really do not want to have a windows machine, but my wife needs some medical programs that I cannot get to work on SuSE with wine, so I am stuck

I will review your reply after the kids go to bed.

Thanks for the help
