connecting fedora 9 OS to Windows XP OS with nomachine (freenx and nx)
Has anyone gotten nomachine with freenx and nx to work with Fedora 9? Everything seemed to install correctly, but I can't seem t get access to my linux box from my windows xp pc.
I installed the program using:
yum install freenx nx
I also used the rpm guide found on the nomachine website.
Installation seemed to go well, and the nxserver has started (although nothing is listed under "services").
When I try to connect from my windows xp machine I get the following error:
"The NX service is not available or the NX access was disabled on host 192.192.0.101" (the IP address is the address of my NIC card on my linux box).
When I click "Detail" I get the following:
NX> 203 NXSSH running with pid: 3472
NX> 285 Enabling check on switch command
NX> 285 Enabling skip of SSH config files
NX> 285 Setting the preferred NX options
NX> 200 Connected to address: 192.192.0.101 on port: 22
NX> 202 Authenticating user: nx
NX> 208 Using auth method: publickey
NX> 204 Authentication failed.
The client pc (windows xp box) and server pc (linux - fedora 9 box) both have identical keys installed too. I changed the corresponding files:
server.id_dsa.key
client.id_dsa.key
default.id_dsa.key
Have you considered using VNC instead of freenx ?
It's pretty easy to install and it works on both platforms without much trouble.
I don't know about security though, but I think you can wrap it in SSL.
Try to connect to your linux box over ssh (e.g. use putty). Does it work? If not, something must be wrong with your nxserver or connection (is ssh port open?)
Try to connect from another linux/unix box. If it works, your xp installation is wrong.
I haven't installed nxserver but the both win and linux clients. The connection went quite smoothly in both cases.
I looked into VNC - but I had a bunch of security errors on my winblows machines; so I decided against doing anything further for fear that I would be hijacked at some point. In other words - security isn't good.
I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I followed the instructions here:
