Confused about KDE reqs - libsmb

Hoping someone can help me out...

In the KDE 3.1.2 required/recommended/optional prerequisites, it mentions that libsmb is required for access to SMB shares. The link on the KDE site points to an old page (in software terms) with code from '99, which does not even come close to compiling on my system (gcc 3.2.3, glibc 2.3.2, GNU binutils 2.13.2). Also, if I browse through the KDE email archives, there is mention of the use of the libsmbclient code within Samba.

So, do I really need libsmb to access SMB shares via KDE at all?

Any help would be much appreciated.

is it not worth trying googles output from their linux section to see if there is an updated version of that library???

Sorry if this seems like "teaching granny to suck eggs", but I recall finding lib's in strange places when I get hit with the "old unsatisfied dependency cherry" when I have been meddling with RPM's and stuff. Not always in the usual suspects i.e. kde, sourceforge, etc etc.

Yeah, I google'd it and I came up with two Sourceforge pages: one for libsmb and one for libsmb++. The libsmb++ site was newer, but still old. Convenient (not).

That's when I started scrolling through the KDE lists. At some point, it appeared that some libsmb++ code was added to Samba. Also, in one of the LFS hints for KDE 3.x, libsmbclient is mentioned, as well, further adding to my confusion.
