conflict with ftp services

Hello,

I have recently been assigned to manage a redhat enterprise server. The server is new and had proftpd installed on the default image. After days of trying to get proftp configured the way I like it I decided to go back to trusty VSFtpd.

I installed vsftpd with up2date and copied my standard configuration over from my other machines. when I start vsftpd, and then check the status

/etc/init.d/vsftpd status

I get the message "vsftpd dead but subsys locked." This lead me to double check the config but since it is a working file I don't think that is the problem. I think there is a conflict between proftpd (running standalone) and vsftpd (running through initd)

I want to know how to remove the proftpd software from this system completely as well as give vsftpd the "right" to listen on port 21 (i think that is the issue)

Thanks all!

If proftpd is running as a standalone daemon then run "ps -ef|grep proftpd" find it's PID and kill it. After that use your package manager to uninstall it from your system.
