Configuring postgresql

Configuring postgresql to have a fully functional school centre system

I have tried several times to install & configure postgresql
but am experiencing the following problem;

Steps under gone:
Step 1
I installed postgres rpms using command;rpm -ivh
postgresql-package
ie postgres version 8, server v8 & it's develo v8
The installation was successful & marked complete

i- checked on status, it was running
Changed from root to a unpreviledged user as su -
postgres;
when i try to start postmaster as ;postmaster -i
below is the message i get:

FATAL: lock file "/var/lib/pgsql/data/postmaster.pid" already exists
HINT: Is another postmaster (PID 8566) running in data directory "/var/lib/pgsql/data"?

Well,i treid removing postmaster.pid from /var/lib/pgsql/data

After running postmaster -i again, the following massage is displayed;

postgres@rel:~> postmaster -i
LOG: could not bind IPv6 socket: Address already in use
HINT: Is another postmaster already running on port 5432? If not, wait a few seconds and retry.
LOG: could not bind IPv4 socket: Address already in use
HINT: Is another postmaster already running on port 5432? If not, wait a few seconds and retry.

FATAL: lock file "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432.lock" already exists
HINT: Is another postmaster (PID 8566) using socket file "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
postgres@rel:~>

After which i removed the lock file (.s.PGSQL.5432.lock)from /tmp

I treid running postmaster -i again & the following message is returned;

postgres@rel:~> postmaster -i
LOG: could not bind IPv6 socket: Address already in use
HINT: Is another postmaster already running on port 5432? If not, wait a few seconds and retry.
LOG: could not bind IPv4 socket: Address already in use

LOG: redo starts at 0/C7A010
LOG: record with zero length at 0/C7A04C

Immediately after running the postmaster -i & the above massage is displayed postmaster.pid file is recreated in /var/lib/pgsql/data & the same story continues.

WAS postmaster actually running when you tried to start it?

ps aux | grep postmaster

Cheers,
Tink
