Smile Configuring mpd (music player daemon) for best performance

Hi All,
I am running Voyage MPD on a HP netbook. This is a version dedicated to running the daemon on mpod on ALIX boards, but I installed it on this netbook and it runs fine. (See my blog here.) I would be interested in sharing notes with anyone who is running mpd on linux.

Some of the current areas for improvement would be:
1. Not all WAV files are recognized by mpd, only after opening them and saving them in Audacity can mpd play them.
2. What are the optimal values to ensure that mpd is playing always from RAM? Flacs for hi-res audio files can get as big as 420 MB (one side of an LP). The netbook does has a 1gb RAM, but mpd does not accept bigger than 128 MB or so in the mpd.conf.
3. Will I be better off installing a barebones version of Debian, mpd, ALSA etc from scratch on this netbook? The Voyage MPD image does not support CPU scaling for instance..
4. Looking at my current mpd.conf settings as described in blog, is there any scope for improvement?

Thanks all for reading my questions! I am very impressed with the quality of this music server, though it sometimes has difficulty mounting my WD My Passport 1 TB external hard drive in read-write mode. (I just restart the netbook when this happens - habits die hard :-))
