Configuring GTK To Support Themes?

I've been searching online, the latest information I could find on this subject was written 5-6 years ago and is of little help.

I run on Slackware 10, I have GTK 1.2.10 on my system (Too many problems installing to newer version to even want to try it again :-/)

Can anyone help?

Help with what? You didn't actually tell us what isn't working.

GTK supports themes. There's nothing to configure. You just have to install a theme and set, either manually using ~/.gtkrc (I think) or a utility like GTK Theme Switch

I have tried GTK Theme Switch, it constantly says that the directory is not a GTK theme library. Also... I have tried copying the gtkrc file into my home directory. That does not work either.
