configuring 3d for rage 128 not working

I tried to configure the 3d on my graphics card, and while I profess I have no idea what I'm doing the operation seemed simple enough. At the end of the configuration when I typed'startx' heres what i got: I am going to write the xorg.conf file now. Make sure you don't accidently
overwrite a previously configured one.

Do you want it written to the current directory as 'xorg.conf'? y

File has been written. Take a look at it before running 'startx'. Note that
the xorg.conf file must be in one of the directories searched by the server
(e.g. /etc/X11) in order to be used. Within the server press
ctrl, alt and '+' simultaneously to cycle video resolutions. Pressing ctrl,
alt and backspace simultaneously immediately exits the server (use if
the monitor doesn't sync for a particular mode).

For further configuration, refer to the xorg.conf(5) manual page.

sleekmason@linux:~> startx
hostname: Unknown host
xauth: creating new authority file /home/sleekmason/.serverauth.10481

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console
sleekmason@linux:~>

Is there something else i should be doing/ Lets say I just told you that my 3d on my graphics card didnt work, what would you tell me? How should I proceed? There are 4-5 other posts concerning this same thing but I cant make sense of them.
