Look in configure.log to see what exactly is failing. Otherwise Google the error message, you will find innumerable people with the same problem and a solution.
Well, here is some of the output from config.log. GCC is in the PATH, but it's not recognized in the Core Tests. Maybe I didn't install it correctly? I'm completely lost.

no gcc in /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin /usr/local/i386-linux-4.1.1/bin/i386-linux-gcc
I guess that's the problem, but I'm not sure how to go about fixing it
EDIT: Apparently Apple includes a GCC compiler in their XCode development tool kit. I'm downloading it now, but it's a hefty file and is going to take some time. This solution seems promising, but I'd still appreciate a more timely approach if anyone has one. Thanks again
