Configure Compiz

I have a very simple question that for some reason I cannot find the very simple answer to.

I'm configuring compiz and I would like it to work in KDE. I have qt4 installed in /opt/qt4 and qt3 in /usr.

How do I tell compiz where to find qt4?

./configure ???

Reading through the makefiles, maybe you could set QTDIR=/opt/qt4 or something along those lines?

i.e.
$ QTDIR=/opt/qt4 ./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-gconf

I was able to get everything compiled against what looks like qt3 just by switching to the development version 0.3.6 over stable version 0.2.2. But now I have another question. Can compiz be run on it's own as a window manager or does it have to be part of kde or gnome?

Maybe that was a stupid question but I really don't know the answer. If there really is a way to make it run on it's own I'd really like to know.
