configure/compile help

I have downloaded Linux software called Freediag (a CLI motor vehicle scan tool), but being new to Linux I do not have a clue how to install it. The instructions describe it as "a source-code distribution which will have to be configured/compiled for your Linux system". " To do this unpack the archive and in the directory, type"

I am using Mandrake 9.1 which I have only just installed, I have only used Windows until now.
