configure cannot find libXext

First of all I have to say that I still considder myself as a newbie.
I'm using SUSE 9.2 from a disk I got in LinuxFormat magazine.
I'm trying to install ogle and k-office. Both programs give me the same problem.

When doing ./configure ogle reports
configure: error: You need libXext.

I have to tell K-Office where x lib and x include libraries are with
./configure --with-x --x-includes=/usr/X11R6/include --x-libraries=/usr/X11R6/lib
after that it reports
checking for libXext... no
configure: error: We need a working libXext to proceed. Since configure
can't find it itself, we stop here assuming that make wouldn't find
them either.

I downloaded a new xorg-x11-libs-6.8.2-35.... rpm and install that.
I check that libXext.so6.4 is in /usr/X11R6/lib.
I checked that /etc/ contains /usr/X11R6/lib and did a ldconfig (read that this might do the trick).

How do i convice these programs that libXext is present or how to find it?

You need to install the xorg development libraries (xorg-x11-devel or something similar).
