Computer seems to have identity disorder

Earlier today I was trying to do something that should be simple (install CUPS) on one of my parent's computers. Unfortunately, the computer is a thin-client refugee and has no CD drive nor space for one - I have to use the network for updates, period.

Because it's such a PITA to upgrade distros, the computer is still using Mandrake Linux 10.0 or 10.1 (which? good question...)

In trying to set the update source, the computer keeps going for the updates/10.1/ on every mirror, the background and drakconf:about both SAY it's mandrake 10.1, but it's looking for a ../base/ file like the one used by mandrake 10.0. I'm drawing a real nasty 404 on this - any one know WTF is wrong with this poor, confused machine and how to fix it?
