Question computer freezes when logged on internet

Have done a clean install of Fedora Core 5. All goes well apart from dial up networking. I have a 56k serial modem which connects ok to my ISP but after a few minutes on the net the computer completly locks up. The keyboard and mouse are totally unresponsive and the only way out is to hit the reset button. It is not a hardware issue as the modem worked fine in Fedora Core 4 and Windows. Is there some setting I am missing here? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this problem is driving me nuts!!
