Composing MIDIs
Hi. I'd like to compose my own MIDI songs like the old windows canyon.mid and passport.mid. Any software recommendations for this task?
Thanks.

You might want to check out Linux Sound & Music it has music software sorted by category. Personally I like Rosegarden, but there are many other choices, such as MusE and Brahms. All of this software can be found under the MIDI section on that Linux Sound & Music page.

I installed Rosegarden and it's a pretty cool program to use. Unfortunately, I can't get any sound! Any ideas on where to start??

Are you getting sound in other programs? Is it the sound or the MIDI that isn't working in Rosegarden? If it's the sound, then maybe you don't have the sound server running (jackd). In Rosegarden go to Settings->Configure Rosegarden then click on the sequencer side item. What does it say for the sequencer status? What does the detailed status say?
If the MIDI isn't working it could really be anything, what kind of sound card do you have?

Oh, and yes, I do have sound in general on my computer.
I tried to run jackd but this happens:
Code:
[ken@ken ken]$ jackd -d alsa -r 44100

jackd comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY

control device hw:0
configuring for 44100Hz, period = 1024 frames, buffer = 2 periods
Couldn't open hw:0 for 32bit samples trying 24bit instead

Is it running? Do a 'ps -A' and see if it is listed as a process. I think mine used to do that back when I had a SB Live, but it still worked ok.

Nope, jackd is not running. But I also discovered something else. I can't even play or hear midi files. I got this from another thread from here http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...readid=244472:
"have you got a maper installed? I know i can't play midis and don't have one but havent had time to look. If running KDE its under sound - sound system - midi - "Use a midi mapper" (bottom)."
I checked on the TEST MIDI and I couldn't hear anything, but when I clicked on TEST SOUND, I can hear the sound file fine. Is this in some way related? What is a MIDI Mapper? Currently my midi is set with Audigy MPU-401 with NO MIDI mapper. Is this correct?

Make sure that your mixer levels for MIDI aren't muted. You also need a soundfont loaded, I assume you are using Mandrake's package manager, which I have never used, but you need to get a package named awesfx or something similar.
Once you have this package you need a sound font (probably from your original Audigy install CD). It will be called something like 8MBGMSFX.SF2. Copy this file to your harddisk. Then run something like this ' /bin/sfxload /path/to/soundfont/8MBGMSFX.SF2'
Then try playing a MIDI file. As far as I know the MIDI shouldn't have to be mapped to anything if you have an Audigy.
