Compling a kernel. Potential problems with old compiled packages?
 

Hello, Just a general question. I am running SUSE 10.0 the standard 32 bit distribution. I now have every thing running pritty sweet at the moment and am just playing around with a few little things like wine and samba. My next project /learning exspearience I am planning is to compile my own kernel. My processor is a Anthon 64 bit so I would optimise the kernal for this processor. I am worried about the fact that most of the extra program I have installed I compiled from source code (I used the defualt configure option except for gcc as I have two versions of this on my system). As I have compiled from source does this mean I shall have to recompile all of the exstra packages I have installed as they will be taylored for my old kernel and not run with a new kernel compiled for athon 64? Or will they still run but would run better if I re compiled them? Also if I compile a athon 64 kernel would I have to get diffrent rpm packages if I install anything from rpm. Sorry if this is all a bit silly

The packages I have installed are two versions of gcc and lots of media / dvd lib & programs.

as far as i know you won't see any of your softwares/programs misbehaving after compiling kernel.
Be it using rpm or source. They will work as fine as they were with old kernel albeit you don't remove the modules/packages required for them to run properly.
