Complile program with manual directory

I know that this is most likely simple; I have some library's and include files that I don't want in there normal directories, but, is there a command that when I do ./configure to a program, that it will look in a directory for those files ?
I am running KDE 3.5 Powerpack.
Thanks for your assistance.

Do you mean the libs and headers are already installed you are trying to configure a package that depends on them? Or do you mean that you want the package to install its libraries somewhere other than the default location?

The packages are away from the default location, and yes a program depends on them. Is there a way for a new program to look for librarys and includes away from the default location and make it look up like /home/steve/lib for instance ?
-Thanks for the reply.

If the libs and headers that are in /home/steve/lib are a dependency for a new package, there may be a switch to pass their location to the configure script. First look at the README or INSTALL file that came with the source. If that doesn't tell you anything, try
Code:
./configure --help
. Look for something like x-include=[DIR] and x-librariesthat can be passed to the configure script.

If you have pkg-config installed and there are *.pc files for the dependency packages, you can configure thusly
Code:
PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/home/steve/lib/pkgconfig" ./configure
If there isn't a *.pc for the dependency, you can create one.
