Now I have so got it mostly to work - apart from the delicious effects.
When I turn on effects, so they work well enough, but the title bar of each window becomes white when the mouse crosses them. I can not even see the three buttons on each window.
My graphics card is from Nvidia and the driver is the latest - version 177.
Although I chose driver version 173, so the problem is the same, so I do not think it is the driver there is something wrong with.
What can the problem is due and how do I remedy this?
I had the same problem when I was using Mandriva. I never did figure out what it was though.
Here is what happened, I (installed?) Mac4Lin[...], so that my Mandriva would look like a Mac OS X, and then when I ran Compiz-Fusion, it kept giving me that crappy look.
I dont have that problem with Ubuntu now, since I have my Original Ubuntu Panels. The only thing I changed is the Panel's colors, and little stuff, so, it works good.
However, there is still one problem that I think is being caused by Compiz. When I Shut Down, the System does not shut down completely. What happens is that Ubuntu shuts completely down, and then I'm left with a black screen with a flashing cursor. Again, it may be Compiz, or it may be some other thing that I dont know of.
Here's a question from me in a different category where my Linux Ubuntu 8.10 has closing problems.
My problem is still not resolved, and it is killing me that it does not work properly.

But maybe it solves your problem.

Lets hope some one can help us out.
This is quite common with the compiz-fussion. the xorg server does not pass it back to the display manager . kdm or gdm. this does not happen all the time though from the three system I put it on. It seems one of the programs are hanging up and for some reason the the xorg server is waiting for it to shut down or what ever.blinking prompt hit control alt delete. because I have not been able to fix the problem.
so I am still looking. But if I do make sure all my programs have been stopped then most of the time this problem does not happen. no help but hey.

It is not an output. I just wanted to know exactly where I should put it. Because I am afraid to smash something ...It is not an output. I just wanted to know exactly where I should put it. Because I am afraid to smash something ...
I tried to type Compiz in Terminal. Here is the output:

Ubuntu you need to down load the Nvidia xgl deb and then on your Xorg file you will make sure you have the correct path to the Xgla.so xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Section "Module"
Load "record"
Load "xtrap"
Load "dbe"
Load "glx"
Load "extmod"
Load "freetype"
Load "type1"
EndSection
theses are set to load by default. and Ubuntu builds there own Nvidia drivers because it is easier to maintain then to tell you how to build them.
then you will need to make sure you have depths set and card options
Identifier "Card0"

Good luck I have been having real problems with th Gos3 system it is the hardy kernel but I will get it Slackware and pclinux have been very easy fedora core got it going but theses Debian setups break the drivers up so much it is hard to get it together let me know. Plus go to the Xorg sit and look at there trouble shoots that really helped me. then when you get all your X modules running then you can fight the crazy the built in gnome or compiz arguments in the scripts. The other reason is since beryl and compiz are together now the new systems are starting to use them so you end up over installing on them and making them broken packages that the package managers does not detect.
