Compiling Programs

Hi,
I have just started using Linux Mandrake 9.1 in KDE(graphical mode) and am trying to install BitchX IRC client but I have no idea what so ever on how to compile a programme. If someone could please help me and make it as simple as possible to follow(especially if using the konsole) that would be great.

I think you might have the option of using RPMs to install bitchx, but am not sure. If you are gonna compile the source, then you need to untar the file 'tar -xvf filename' or 'tar -zxvf filename' (if it's a tar.gz). Then cd into the directory the untar creates and look around for these files README and INSTALL. They will tell you exactly what you need to do ...like 4-5 simple steps usually.

so i assume you have the tar.gz file, so :
tar -zxvf nameofprogram.tar.gz
cd nameofprogram
./configure
make
switch to root and type password
make install
