Compiling Kopete

hey guys,

I've noticed that my kopete was out of date, and so I thought this would be a good time to learn.. I went and downloaded the latest version of kopete, but its all in source code.. So I figured no problem, just compile it... I did ./configure without any problems, then I used the "make" command which went through no problem.. but I'm lost as what to do now.. is it installed? what command do I need to use to run it? where did it install to etc.. (I know a lot of people are going to say README.. but the readme says nothing about how to compile it, just explains what kopete is and what it can do)

its not installed yet. Your next step is to run this command as root "make install"

this should install it to the proper directory, assuming the "configure" and "make" executed with no errors. Then, you can simply clikc your icon, if you had one before, or type in "kopete" at a run prompt, as it should install over the old one into the same directory.

hope this helps.

alright, I ran make install and that went through just fine .. but before i even started to compile kopete I removed the old one (it was installed via rpm on my distrubtion, so removing it was easy) but now I dont have an old icon, so I'll have to make a new one.. I know how to do that, but I dont know where the program was installed to... also is there a way I can set the installation directory?

the install directory is set when you configure..

if you want to be sure, first uninstall the one you just did.. Go to the directory you extracted the source to and run this command as root: "make uninstall". After that is done, run "make clean".

now, when you configure, you can set the directory with a --prefix switch, like: "./configure --prefix=/usr" or "./configure --prefix=/opt/kde3/" This prgoram is a KDE application, and as such, needs to be installed wherever your KDE resides so it will know how to find the proper plugins, etc. You might read this http://kopete.kde.org/index.php?page=installtips

the application will make its own directory with the confines of what you set up. Most programs will also make an executable in the proper place.. Try running "kopete" in the run prompt before you uninstall, though, as it may already be installed where it needs to be. A lot of programs now are pre-configured to install to the proper directory.

ok, well since it needs kde and such I wont fiddle with the directory setting yet.. but I ran make install, it went through fine, and tried typing kopete into the run prompt.. that doesnt work... and I still have no idea where the default directory is.... (i just need to find this executable file and I'm fine)

the locate tools only found the files that were in the source I was dealing with, and not the installed product...
