Compiling kernel takes away alot of disk space

I tried a few weeks ago to compile the latest kernel from source (2.6.6) on my FC 2 machine. I used the the old config file as a base and just added the things i needed ntfs, firewire, etc. I just followed the instruction that I found in a guide here on linuxquestions.org. The compilation and installation went great and the kernel ran, so probs. What suprised me was that the kernel had taken up 1.8 GB of my drive. This I didn't understand. Usually the kernel plus source only takes up 200 to 300 MB when installed from rpms. . So why does take so much space is it the moduels that are generated and then copied to the kernel directory. If so how do I remove them from the source dirrectory? Should I just do make clean after?

Kind Regards

Yep you'll have to do that to clean up the object files which take up the space... But usually not THAT much space!
