Compiling from source - How to

Hi,

I'm a newbie to Linux and this is the first time I need to compile something from source. I've downloaded quicktime4linux which is available only as source and I don't know how to get it working on my Suse 9.3.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

All best,
Goran

The answer for that question is in a sticky. Try searching the forums, or at least look for stickies ^_^

Still, the correct answer should be: "Read the README file". Every program compiles differently and sometimes you've to pass arguments when compiling too, such as enable/disable a feature or change the path of installation. It's not only typing ./configure && make && make install as many believe it is...

Good luck!

Try this:
tar -zxvf quicktime4linux <-- if its gzipped -jxvf if its bzipped
enter the directory quicktime4linux
./configure
make
now if you want it to be available to all users
su
make install

good luck.
