Compiler version

Well I'm trying to install a VLSI process simulation software called FLOOxS, but when I run the make command I got errors referring to the compiler version.

The problem is that the FLOOxS software was created for a version of "C" that didn't need to define the return type, but my current compiler needs the definition of the return type.

So my question is which version of gcc is the one that doesn't need to define the return type of the variables?

Well thanks for your time.
