Compile wpa_gui

Hoe should I compile WPA_gui? Most of the howto's refure to a simple make wpa_gui but that's not working (no target bla bla).
I've downloaded the latest version and compiled wpa_supplicant with this .config:

I'm using ndiswrapper for my smc card and really need to get wpa running. I just can't connect to my AP (non protected in the area work just fine) so I'd like to see what the gui tells me. Just can't compile it. Any clues?

The actual error message would help a lot more than "no target bla bla". Besides, I doubt the GUI will make configuration any easier. I have outlined using it on Ubuntu, stock Debian shouldn't be any different.
